Abstract Virginia native Thomas "Cal" Muse describes his experience surveying the Blue Ridge Parkway through the Bureau of Public Roads during the Great Depression. Included are his first impressions of the Blue Ridge Parkway as a project; and his description of work and weather conditions as a surveyor. Muse also details his efforts toward receiving an education in Engineering at the University of Virginia during difficult economic times and how his work on the parkway helped finance his education. Details of room and board conditions for surveyors and salary for parkway employees are also described.
