About this Item
Title | Root Cellar and Gear Loft on original site |
Title Note | Built by John C. Clark, 1881 |
Date | September 1952 |
Description | This image shows the detail of one corner of a log and stone structure. The image shows a portion of the east elevation, and the northeast corner of the structure. The bottom portion of the wall appears to be constructed of stone packed into a log frame, while the top half is constructed of logs. There are large gaps between the logs, most of which are filled with long wooden boards. The roof on the structure appears to have only a slight pitch, and it is made of wooden shingles. Another structure is visible in the background of the image. The image was taken near milepost 36.4 in Section 1E of the Blue Ridge Parkway, at the original site of the structure. The structure was disassembled at this site, and reconstructed near the Humpback Rocks Visitor Center, near milepost 5.8 in Section 1B of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Image taken by C.S. Grossman in September 1952. |
