About this Item

Title Peaks of Otter - Gross House - Razed
Date February 9, 1949
Description Image shows the exterior of a wooden structure, which is identified as the Gross house. The corner joint where two sides meet is visible, and it is possible to see how the logs were notched to fit together. These logs are roughly hewn, and the large spaces between them are packed with stone and wood pieces, likely for insulation. On one wall, these pieces have been removed and the back of the boards that may comprise part of the interior wall are visible. The material that covered the roof has been partially removed. The image was taken in the Peaks of Otter area, near the relocation site of Virginia State Route 43, near milepost 87 and Section 1K of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Taken by Sam P. Weems on February 9, 1949.
