The sign reads: Peaks of Otter / Sharp Top, elev. 3875, where people have climbed since Revolutionary days to view the sunrise, was once believed to be Virginia's highest peak. A stone in the Washington Monument is inscribed, "From Virginia's loftiest mountain, to Virginia's noblest son".
