Description Image shows a wooden sign that is titled "Peaks of Otter". The image was taken in the Peaks of Otter area by Sam P. Weems in May 1958. The sign reads:

Peaks of Otter / Sharp Top, elev. 3875, where people have climbed since Revolutionary days to view the sunrise, was once believed to be Virginia's highest peak. A stone in the Washington Monument is inscribed, "From Virginia's loftiest mountain, to Virginia's noblest son". Later surveys proved others higher, including nearby Flat Top, elev. 4001. / United States Department of the Interior / National Park Service
