Title Interpretive Sign - Mt. Airy Granite

Description Image shows an interpretive sign titled "Mt. Airy Granite". Below the sign there is a piece of granite rock that has been vandalized. A portion of the parking area in front of the sign is also visible in the image. The image was taken at the Granite Quarry Overlook, near milepost 202.8 in Section 1V of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Taken by Donald H. Robinson in July 1964. The sign reads:

Mt. Airy Granite / The white patch, dimly visible in the distance, is the Mt. Airy Granite Quarry, largest of its type in the United States. From it came the piece of granite below. Typically feldspar and quartz with a sprinkling of black biotite mica. This granite is widely used in construction of mausoleums, statues, buildings and bridges. / United States Department of the Interior / National Park Service
