Title Southern Pine Bark Beetle
Date February 7, 1974
Description A look at the effects of a southern pine bark beetle infestation at milepost 388.84 in section 2R of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Taken by Robert G. Bruce on February 7, 1974.
Commentary This pest is present in the Asheville area and causes massive tree decay and death. This has been a problem in maintaining the forest landscape surrounding the Blue Ridge Parkway. Not only does the beetle attack the tree internally, but before it is dead, the pine needles turn yellow and red while fungus and pitch appear on the tree bark.
