Commentary | The National Park Service acquired the land associated with Brinegar Cabin in 1935 and 1937. This photograph, taken in 1944, shows that the cabin was in dire need of repairs if historical interpretation for visitors was going to occur. Although major restoration of Brinegar Cabin did not occur until 1975, from the dates of the photographs in late 1941 and 1942, there was some work done to the site. This photograph gives a visitor a clear sense of the shape of the cabin prior to any work or restoration. It also allows a viewer to compare the cabin's appearance following restoration. From this particular photograph, one can see a very simple entrance way that sits in direct contrast to the one in 1975. Moreover, there are no steps or paths leading up to the cabin's door as in 1975. |
