About this Item
Title | Burkes Creek Fire Tower near Big Witch Creek |
Date | July 26, 1938 |
Description | Photograph shows a view of mountains as seen from the fire tower near Big Witch Creek and mile post 461.6 at the junction of sections 2Y and 2Z of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Taken by Edward H. Abbuehl on July 26, 1938. |
Commentary | During this period there was controversy between the Eastern Band of Cherokee and the National Park Service about whether section 2Z of the Blue Ridge Parkway should run through Soco Valley (through the Qualla Boundary) or on a ridge route through the mountains. This photo shows the stunning view that the ridge route would provide. A scenic overlook would later be built in this area. |
