About this Item
Title | Trading Post, interior |
Date | September 19, 1959 |
Description | Photograph shows people and assorted merchandise, including postcards and crafts, inside the Northwest Trading Post store at mile post 258.6 in section 2D of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Taken by Earl W. Estes, Jr. on September 19, 1959. On the back wall, there is a display of old rifles and a yoke from a plow. |
Commentary | The stated goal of the founders of the Northwest Trading Post was to display and sell the local crafts and goods produced by the people who lived in the 10 counties along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Along with crafts and baked goods, some souvenirs were also available. The interior, like the exterior, is designed to resemble the 'rustic' mountain homes that the National Park Service displayed along the Blue Ridge Parkway. This photo was taken after the Northwest Trading Post had celebrated its first anniversary. |
