About this Item
Title | Early Construction |
Title Note | Near mile post 271.3 |
Date | August 19, 1936 |
Description | Photograph shows automobiles near a rudimentary road cut on a hillside near mile post 271.3 in section 2E of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Taken by W. D. Stanton on August 19, 1936. |
Commentary | The Blue Ridge Parkway was not simply laid upon the natural landscape. Though the construction in this photograph is barely under way, it is still visually striking how much of the hillside has been carved away. This style of construction could have added to the erosion problems in this area. |
