About this Image

Title Tunnel No. 1 East Portal
Date April 28, 1943
Description Photograph shows rocky hillside to the left of a tunnel entrance near mile post 333.5 in section 2L of the Blue Ridge Parkway, with a sign in the foreground warning "Icy Road." Taken by Ted Pease on April 28, 1943.
Commentary The carving into the mountain and the blasting the took place creates a natural underpass and a greater feeling of being one with nature. This side view of the tunnel wall shows the end result of much physical labor.
