About this Item
Title | South Portal Tanbark Ridge Tunnel |
Date | 1940s |
Description | Photograph shows the south entrance to the Tanbark Ridge Tunnel near station 780 and mile post 374.6 in section 2P of the Blue Ridge Parkway. |
Commentary | Ian Firth's draft Blue Ridge Parkway Historic Resource Study (p. 242) indicates that stone portals were added to the entrances of many Parkway tunnels beginning in the late 1940s, and that this work began on Section 2P in 1949. The south portal of the Tanbark Ridge tunnel was one that received a stone portal. Date of photograph is estimated given the fact that construction on 2P began in 1936 and this photograph predates addition of the stone portal. |
