About this Item
Title | Early Road Cut in Section 2A |
Date | June 23, 1936 |
Description | Image shows an early road cut in section 2A, the first section of the Blue Ridge Parkway to be constructed. |
Commentary | The Public Works Administration, who hired 100 workers, carried out the construction of this section. During construction, there was conscious effort to preserve natural vegetation wherever possible. This seems evidenced by number of trees left so close to the road cut. Many of the trees and various impediments to construction (boulders, rocks, etc.) were removed by hand or hand-operated tools, making the earlier construction particularly strenuous. |
