About this Item
Title | Pre-Asphalt Road in Section 2A |
Date | June 23, 1936 |
Description | Photograph shows unpaved part of road in section 2A of the Blue Ridge Parkway, with two farm buildings on the left. |
Commentary | Here is an example of the initial flattened road of the Parkway before asphalt was used in the road construction. The road, here, is flat but full of smaller, coarser stones, which more than likely made for a bumpy ride on the early Parkway. The image is looking southward down the Parkway. To the left of the road there are two buildings. It is unclear whether those buildings were owned by the National Park Service at that time. |
