Description Photograph shows the carriage house at the Moses H. Cone Memorial Park near mile post 294 in section 2G of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Taken from the ground level by F. A. Ketterson, Jr. in February 1976.
Commentary The Moses H. Cone Estate, built around 1900 near Blowing Rock, North Carolina, included about 500 acres of farmland, Flat Top Mountain, nearby Rich Mountain, and a home called Flat Top Manor that had 23 rooms. The Cones retained their land while the National Park Service developed the Blue Ridge Parkway and the land was not transferred to the National Park Service until a few years after Bertha Cone’s death in 1949. Today the Flat Top Manor is open to the public and houses a craft shop and demonstration center.
