About this Item
Title | Interior of Manor House |
Date | September 9, 1948 |
Description | Photograph shows fireplace and interior of Flat Top Manor near mile post 291 in section 2G of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Taken by Abbie Rowe in September 1948. |
Commentary | This fireplace is part of the Moses Cone Estate which the National Park Service gained control of in 1949. The estate did not fit into the image that the NPS was trying to depict throughout the Blue Ridge Parkway so many of its outbuildings were torn down over the years. They considered tearing down the Estate itself, but eventually they decided to convert the Estate to a museum of early pioneer life and craft sales center. The Southern Highland Handicraft Guild was eventually put in charge of the Estate. |
