| Commentary | Cumberland Knob is located just south of the Virginia State Line and was the first recreational places built for the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was opened in 1937. The Park Service wanted to include full service recreational areas which included gas stations, restaurants, etc at the site. The National Park Service was able to purchase the land through Resettlement Administration funds. Abbott was a big proponent of including these recreational places. |
