J. W. Hood, (James Walker), 1831-1918
James Walker Hood (1831-1918) was a bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion (A. M. E. Z.) Church. He was born in Pennsylvania, but moved to North Carolina in 1864 to carry out religious work among emancipated slaves. Hood supervised the establishment and administration of Zion Wesley Institute (Livingstone College). He was the first black man to publish a collection of sermons. He also served as an advisor to Theodore Roosevelt on issues regarding African Americans.
