    The Israel Boone marker is a 12 inch by 24 inch bronze plaque attached to a low marble block 16 inches by 20 inches. It rests behind an area paved with pieces of slate and to the left of a memorial plaque that details the history of the Boone family in Davie County. To the right of the history marker is the grave site of Squire and Sarah Boone, the parents of Israel and Daniel Boone.

    ISRAEL BOONE / BORN MAY, MAY 20 (N.S.), BUCKS COUNTY, PA / DIED JUNE 26, 1756, DAVIE COUNTY, NC / A FEW FEET TO THE RIGHT, ISRAEL BOONE RESTS FOR ETERNITY. ISRAEL WAS THE 2ND / OF 11 CHILDREN BORN TO SQUIRE AND SARAH MORGAN BOONE AND THEIR ONLY CHILD / TO BE BURIED IN NORTH CAROLINA

    ISRAEL MARRIED IN 1747 WHILE IN PENNSYLVANIA. THE NAME OF HIS WIFE AND / THE LOCATION OF HER BURIAL HAVE NEVER BEEN PROVEN. TO THEM WERE BORN 4 / CHILDREN, JESSIE, JONATHAN, ELIZABETH AND SARAH (SALLIE).

    Denny Custer, President of the Boone Society, presided over the dedication of the Israel Boone memorial marker at Joppa Cemetery.

  • Subject Notes

    Joppa Cemetery is one of the oldest and most historic graveyards in Davie County. In addition to the Israel Boone gravesite the burial grounds contain the graves of his parents Squire and Sarah Boone. Israel is the brother of Daniel Boone who lived near Bear Creek during his teens and early twenties.

    The Cemetery is located off Highway 601 in Mocksville. The Boone gravesites are located in the back section of the cemetery beyond a low stone wall accessed through an iron gate.
