PETITION OF TIMO BIGGS TO THE KING [19 February 1679-80.]

To the most mighty and Serreine Prince Charles the Second and Great Kinge off England Scotland France & Ireland Defendor of the faith &c

The most submiss and Humble Pettition of Timo Biggs Compr and Survayr Genrll of Yor Maties Customs in Albemarle County in the Province of Carolina & depty for the Rt. Honrble the Earle of Craven one of the Lords Propriattrs Therof

With all Humility most Humbly sheweth That yor Pittitioner wth three of the Lords Propriattrs Deptyes & yor Maties Colectr & all his officers & the officers of the Governmt were one the 4th day of December in ye yeare 1677 were by a siditious ffactious & Rebelious Rable mustered in Armes vialently seazed & imprisoned & all yt would not joyne wth them were forced for refuge sake to fly in to Virginia who wer also of ye Govermt & Parlamt upon false pretences & suggestions as the inclosed deposition will manifest to trouth of wch are severall Evidences—the wch was by his Grace the Duke of Albemarle delivered to the Lord Treasurer, In ordr to bringing it befor yor Maty & yor Pittitionr accordingly ordered

there unto Butt after againe Comanded the Contrary & sent Bake after a great charge & trouble to yor pittitioner to Albemarle wthout any Redresse where yor Pittitioner & loyall subjects have no safety but by undr unsufferable oppression as appeares at larg per ye inclosed being Copy of a Lettr to ye Propriatrs for releafe but none appeareing

Yor most humble pittitioner in behalfe of himselfe & sondry other great Sufferors as well for protection ffor yor ffuter officers as discountinance to Rebellions wth all Humilitye prayes yor Matie To take some speedy course & care to reduce ye same & satle the governt on that firme foundation as may give discoridgemt to such proceedings for ye ffuttr whereby yor subjects may be safe in the Injoyments of yor Rights & Libertyes the wch a vessell drawing seaven foot wattr wth sixty men & tenn guns wth ordrs to Virginia Governmt assistance if occasion require will effect & wthout wch will no lawfull Governt be obeyed & yor pittioner as in duty bound will ever pray
