Letter from Alexander Elmsly to Samuel Johnston.

London 9th May 1774.

Dear Sir,

This serves to introduce to you Mr Knight who is appointed to succeed your Brother in Law as Controler of your Port; his friends tell me he is at present in So Carolina and he must necessarily pass through Newbern, where I presume the Governor will be, I have, in order to save him a very disagreeable Journey back to that place, wrote to Mr Berry to assist him in giving the security which is required to entitle him to his Commission at Boston. Should this

Expedient miscarry, of which I think there is little Danger, you will be so good & send him Back to Newbern with Letters to some of your friends there, in order to save him a Trip to New England.
