May 9th, 1782.

Sir:

I return you the letters addressed to you from Gov. Mathews and General Marion and thank you for their perusal. I have taken a Copy of them.

You have herewith a letter from the Count De Rochambeau received yesterday, which, being addressed to you in public character, I took the liberty to open and find in it an answer to yours respecting the defence of our Sea Coast.
