COL. ROBERT BURTON TO GOV. THOS. BURKE.

February 20th, 1782.

Sir:

Majr. Mountflorence, who has been an active and useful Officer in the Quarter Master’s Department, is very bare of Cloathing and has no way of procuring them but by his Wages due from the State. I have no money in my hands or any other means of paying him; if, therefore, you would give him an Order to draw Shirting, Linen, Stockings and Cloth for a Coat out of the State Stores at Halifax you will much oblige him. I am largely in arrears to sundry persons in my department, and shall be much Obliged to you to send me Warrants on any of the Treasurers of this State to the Amount of Two Hundred Thousand Pounds to enable me to make payment. There is a Quantity of Iron at Newbern belonging to the State—please order what you’ll have done with it.

The ten Waggons you gave Orders for are Ordered from Salisbury and I hope will soon be down. I will make you a return of the deliveries from my department to the Continental Army as soon as I can procure a return from the Salisbury Station, which will be done as soon as Majr. Mountflorence returns to that place.

With much Esteem,
I am your Excellency’s Hbl. Servt.,
RO. BURTON,
Q. M. Genl.

P. S.—I have several Horses at this Station that are unfit for Service—please order what will be done with them.
