CAPT. THOS. STEELE TO CAPT. MARTIN.

Halifax, March 4th, 1782.

Sir:

In your Letter to his Excelcy. of the 1st Inst., you are not particular enough to mention the names of the Counties from which Beef is not to be expected. We have always been taught to believe that in some Counties of Edenton District the Horned Cattle are in the Height of perfection at this season. I do not know the reason the Comrs. have not the Beef on hand as they were ordered at least 4 Months ago. As to receiving porke in Lieu of sd. Beaves, I do not understand. However in my opinion, you might have taken as much porke as could be pressed, nevertheless a Beef contribution, when to be had, as the Comy. Genl. intended the Meat remg. of your District, after the Debts, were to go to the supply of the F. Army, thro’ this State, on their way to the Southward. Colo. Davie has directed all the Salt and Pub. P. in Edenton to be forwarded to this place, which I must request you to attend to. The Merchants prefer Fresh porke. You will be so kind as to write me immediately, & notify the Counties from which Beef is not to be

expected & how much porke. We were directed to correspond with each other, & I have wrote 3 times & recd. no answer.

I am, Sir, Your obdt. Servt.,
THOS. STEELE,
