LT. COL. H. MURFREE TO BRIG. GENERAL SUMNER.

Murfree’s Landing, 18th Aug., 1782.

Dear General:

Captain Dixon has been waiting at Winton since the 1st of the month, and has had no men delivered. They classed the men in Hertford & Gates Counties yesterday, and are to be draaughted nine days hence. Some of the lower counties have draughted their men,

but have not got them clothed, and don’t appear to be in a hurry about it. Col. Wynns informs Captain Dixon that he cannot have his men ready to deliver before a month from this time. I suppose it will be that time before any will be delivered in this district. Captain Dixon having nothing to do has gone to Hillsborough, leaving Captain Walton at Winton to receive the men, should there be any ready to deliver, and if it meet with your approbation he will not return. If he goes over to Cumberland, Captain Walton is a very good attentive officer and who I would recommend to receive the troops should Captain Dixon not return.

There is a part of a ream of Paper, public property at Winton, which I will get and send to you the first opportunity. If there is anything I can do for you in this part of the Country pray let me know it.

I am Dr. Sir your most humble servant,
H. MURFREE.

N. B. Please to make my compliments to Miss Polly, Capt’s. Armstrong & Fawn.

I was at Winton yesterday where there is plenty of good fine thread, but forgot to get any, but have sent you a little, tho’ am afraid it is Coarse but will the first opportunity send you some that is good. I can also get you a pruning knife and will send at the same time.

I am yours, &c.,
H. M.
