Joseph Montrose Graham (1823-1887) of Lincolnton, NC, was the son of Elizabeth Connor (1797-1836) and John Davidson Graham (1789-1847). Joseph entered the University in 1840, joined the Dialectic Society, and graduated in 1844. He married Mary A. G. Washington of New Bern, NC, and became a planter in Camden, AR. The home they built in 1858, the Graham-Gaughan-Betts house, still stands. Graham attained the rank of major in the Confederate army.
