Haywood, William Henry, Jr.

During the 1841 Commencement, William Henry Haywood, Jr. (1801-1852), a former member of the Dialectic Society and graduate of the class of 1819, delivered an address titled "Want of State Pride" at a joint meeting of the Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies. Haywood, a lawyer from Raleigh, NC, had a distinguished career in the NC House of Commons, becoming Speaker of the House in 1836. Elected to the US Senate in 1843, he served until 1846, supporting his classmate and lifelong friend, James Knox Polk. He married Jane Graham (1806-1866) in 1826, and they were the parents of three sons and six daughters (Dictionary of North Carolina Biography 3:89-90).
