David Coleman (1824-1883) of Buncombe County, NC, was the son of William (d. 1874) and Cynthia Swain (d. 1829) Coleman, sister of University president David Lowry Swain (1801-1868). He entered the University in 1837, joined the Dialectic Society, and graduated in 1842. At the age of 21 he joined the US Navy, serving until 1850. Returning to Asheville, NC, Coleman became a lawyer and was elected to the NC Senate from 1854 to 1856. He held the rank of colonel in the Confederate Army and was wounded at Murfreesboro, TN. After the war he was a delegate to the NC Constitutional Convention of 1875 (White).
