John Cowan (1823-1861) of Wilmington, NC, was the son of John and Jane Amelia Dick (b. 1804) Cowan. He entered the University in 1840, joined the Dialectic Society, and graduated in 1844. He married Susan E. Black (b. 1825) in 1846.
