Philemon Benjamin Hawkins (1823-1891) of Franklin County, NC, was one of 13 children born to Jane Anderson Boyd (b. 1785) and lawyer John Davis (1781-1858) Hawkins. He entered the University in 1840, joined the Dialectic Society, and graduated in 1844. A planter and contractor engaged in railroad construction, he served as a member of the NC General Assembly. He married his cousin, Fanny Martin Hawkins (1832-1903); they were the parents of a son and daughter.
