William Rainey Holt (1798-1868), the oldest son of Michael and Rachel Rainey Holt, graduated from the University in 1817 and obtained his medical degree from the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. With an established medical practice in Lexington, NC, Holt was well known for trying new methods of agriculture on his farm and for supporting improved education (Dictionary of North Carolina Biography 3:191-92).
