| In South Carolina, North Carolina, and in other southern states, many cities and towns also issued their own paper money during the war. As stated on this 1862 five-cent note, this currency could be used to pay taxes and other debts or "dues" to the City of Charleston. Visible at the center of this note is a mirror image of the large block-printing of "FIVE," a reverse image of the word that was printed on the backside of the note and partially bled through the thin paper. |
