NC 25¢ Note
Ceres at left; Printed date "Sept. 1st, 1862."
Portrayed on this North Carolina note is another Roman goddess, Ceres, who symbolizes agriculture. Unfortunately for the South, the regional economy's near total reliance on agriculture made Confederate independence improbable from the war's outset. Lacking the factories, transportation networks, and the financial institutions established in the North's more diversified economy, the South was unable to meet its industrial needs as the war continued to grind on for years.
