North Carolina State Issue, 1862
NC Twenty-Dollar Notes
Written date "Feb. 15th, 1862."
This note's central figure is commonly identified in currency references as Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture. This identification is questionable, given the trumpet being held by her and the lack of any agricultural elements. Whatever her representation, this woman's bare-breasted depiction is unusual, even for a goddess. Bowing to the starchy propriety of Victorian America, currency designers would rarely leave a female figure so blatantly exposed.
