| Three different designs for North Carolina five-dollar notes were issued in 1862. The same small train scene (far right) was used in the same location on two of the three designs. It was a common practice for printers to reuse engraved images, even on currencies issued by different states. Featured here is yet another variation of the Roman goddess Ceres. This identical image of Ceres with the same sailing ship in the background can be found on ten-dollar Confederate currency produced for the State of Missouri in 1862. It should be noted that while Missouri did not formally secede from the Union, a sizeable portion of that state's population supported the South's fight for independence. |
