        <head>AMENDMENT<lb/>
Proposed by the Committee on Finance, to the Bill (H. R. 229) to provide more effectually for the reduction and redemption of the currency.</head>
        <p>1  Strike out Section 2, and insert in lieu thereof, as follows:<lb/>
2 “SEC. 2. That the Secretary of the Treasury be, and he is hereby<lb/>
3 directed and required, whenever, in his judgment, the exigencies<lb/>
4 of the Government will permit, to cancel from time to<lb/>
5 time such an amount of Treasury notes as may be received<lb/>
6 into the Treasury, until the amount outstanding shall have been<lb/>
7  reduced to two hundred millions of dollars.”</p>
        <p>1  Strike out all of Section 5 after the word Treasury, in the<lb/>
2 12th line.</p>
