Pursuant to call, the colored Republicans of the various Wards of the city of Charlotte met at Zion school house, September 4th, 1884, and organized into a mass meeting. J. M. Goode was elected chairman and H. H. Martin, secretary. After matured deliberation, a committee of seven was appointed to issue an address to the Republican voters of Mecklenburg county, setting forth their grievances to said voters. Now, fellow citizens, there are 3,000 colored Republican voters in this county, and 250 whites. Seeing that there are 38 or more Federal appointments in this county, of this number there are 3 colored and 35 whites. In the coming election there will be 29 candidates to be supported, of which number 10 will be nominated by the Republican convention on the 13th inst. If said nominees are all white, and are elected, there will be 45 white office-holders in the county to three colored.

Fellow-Citizens, Is this Justice? We Say, No. Seeing this injustice, fellow-citizens, according to our political status in this county, we appeal to you, and ask you will you tolerate this any longer? We think not. In accordance with an understanding of the Republican Executive Committee of Mecklenburg county, that our political status demanded that the 3000 colored voters should have a representative on the Republican ticket to be nominated on the 13th inst., knowing as we do that there is an ATTEMPT being made by a few of the Federal office-holders in this county to DEFEAT the WILL of a majority of the people to place colored men on the ticket. They claim that colored men will weaken the ticket, but we say that it will GREATLY strengthen the ticket, and we believe that the success of the party depends largely upon the representation of colored men on the ticket.

We ask you, fellow-citizens, to see that in each precinct delegates be elected to carry out the previous agreement of the Executive Committee to have colored representation on the ticket. We close by asking you Can you bear this any longer? Knowing your zeal and patriotism to the party in the past, we say no.
