Floodwaters rise surprisingly quickly

The Cavenaughs briefly describe the rising floodwaters, which rose suddenly and killed all their turkeys. The speed with which the water rose surprised the Cavenaughs, who were accustomed to watching it rise slowly up a measuring stick.
