Need for a comprehensive catalogue of the officers and faculty of the University of North Carolina led to the compilation of this register by the staff of the North Carolina Collection. The period covered, 1795-1945, is that of the Sesqui-Centennial being celebrated at the time when it was compiled. No register has been made previously with the exception of the list made by Cornelia Phillips Spencer in 1889 and published in Kemp Plummer Battle's Sketches of the University of North Carolina Together With a Catalogue of Officers and Students (Chapel Hill, 1889)
The main source was The University of North Carolina Catalogue, 1818/19-1825/26, 1827/28-1944/45. For the early years before the Catalogue was published, the manuscript minutes of the Board of Trustees and Kemp Plummer Battle's History of the University of North Carolina (Raleigh, 1907-1912) were used. Inclusive dates of service and changes in rank and title are indicated by the date of the catalogue in which they appear. Advanced degrees awarded during period of service are indicated by dates of catalogue in which they are first recorded. Teachers in Summer School are omitted following the year 1899 when they ceased to be recorded in the general Catalogue. Student assistants are omitted following 1899 for the sake of brevity.
Transfer of names from the Catalogue to index cards was made by Louise Grice Crain and Marian Fuller. Notes from other sources were added by Helen Dortch Harrison. The work was compiled in its final form by Mary Lindsay Thornton, and the manuscript was typed by Jane Cutler Behnsen.
