1. Faculty Minutes 3:226, UA. Recitations were held at 7:00 a.m. ("Morn"), 11:00 a.m. ("Forenoon"), and at 4:00 p.m. ("Afternoon"), except on Mondays, when the morning recitation was dispensed with for all students. Seniors had no morning recitations. Though the chart places the Sunday recitation on the Bible in the "morn" column, the recitations took place in the afternoon.

During this period, David Swain was professor of mental and moral philosophy, political economy, and law; James Phillips, professor of mathematics and natural philosophy; Manuel Fetter, professor of Greek; William Mercer Green, professor of rhetoric and logic; John De Berniere Hooper, professor of Latin; Elisha Mitchell, professor of chemistry, geology, and mineralogy; and Charles Marey, instructor of French. Notice that first-year students were taught by tutors, except for two classes per week in Greek with Professor Fetter. William Hayes Owen, tutor for ancient languages, and Ralph H. Graves, tutor for mathematics, graduated from the University in 1833 and 1836 respectively.
