		  <p TEIform="p"> The astonishment with which I met, in the perusal of you letter,
			 induces me to write to you immediatly. I find in your letter, that I am accused
			 of neglecting my studies, and also of di<add TEIform="add" hand="JP" rend="sup">s</add>order,
			 both of which charges, I deny, and can prove at any time to be false, by those
			 to whom I recite and also by my whole class. I have consulted 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="pn0001638" reg="Swain, David Lowry" type="person">Govenor
				[David] Swain</name> concerning the affair, and he says, that he knows nothing
			 against me. As to being disorderly, I am verry certain, how that originated;
			 some three or four weeks ago

			 <name TEIform="name" key="name0000165" reg="Chapel Hill, NC" rend="no" type="place">hill</name>, and one evening at pray;s, something took place,
			 which created a great laughter, and

				[Elisha] Mitchell</name>, (to be smart) got up, and spoke verry harshly, and in
			 return, nearly every fellow in college commenced stamping; and those whom he
			 did not see, he repo<add TEIform="add" hand="JP" rend="sup">r</add>ted on suspicion.<ref TEIform="ref" id="ref503" rend="sup" targOrder="U" target="note503" type="info">2</ref> The
			 honors were distributed among the senior class this morning, and as usual with
			 great partiality.

			 <name TEIform="name" key="pn0001109" reg="Maultsby, John Alexander" type="person">Malsby</name>, who were entitled to the first honor, have

			 missed more than three words this session, and

			 being a member of the 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="name0000284" reg="Dialectic Society" type="organization">Dialectic society</name>, gets first, and 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="pn0001109" reg="Maultsby, John Alexander" type="person">Malsby</name>, because he is a member of the 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="name0000869" reg="Philanthropic Society" type="organization">Philanthropic society</name> gets only second. Various acts
			 of partiality <del TEIform="del" hand="JP" rend="overstrike" status="unremarkable">of</del>have thus been
			 confere<add TEIform="add" hand="JP" rend="sup">d</add> on the 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="name0000284" reg="Dialectic Society" type="organization">Dialectic Sosiety</name>, and daily observation proves to
			 me, that the Faculty are a set of rascals. I hope when you recieve this, that
			 you will have no further doubts as to the dissolute course which, some of the
			 Faculty would have you believe, I have been pursueing.</p>
