		  <p> Minutes of the September 25, 1857, meeting of the Dialectic Society
			 report on the admission of new members. A debate "Should Congress pass an
			 international copyright law?" was decided in the affirmative, principals
			 for the next debate were appointed, and 38 members were fined. Minutes for the
			 meeting on September 26, 1857, report that two students gave orations, that the
			 "third class" composed and the "fourth" declaimed, that
			 several students were appointed to various offices, and that 21 students were
			 fined.</p>

				The 
				<name key="pn0001171" reg="Mebane, Cornelius" type="person">Sec.</name> read the proceedings of the last meeting, which were
				approved. Upon motion of 
				<name key="pn0000667" reg="Hamlin, Richard Franklin" type="person">Mr
				  Hamlin</name> 
				<name key="pn0001122" reg="McClure, William K." type="person">Mr M<hi rend="sup">c</hi>Clure</name> was admitted as a regular member of our 
				<name key="name0000284" reg="Dialectic Society" type="organization">Society</name>. Messrs 
				<name key="pn0000667" reg="Hamlin, Richard Franklin" type="person">Hamlin</name> and 
				<name key="pn0000585" reg="Gilmer, John Alexander" type="person">Gilmer</name> were appointed to conduct the gentleman in. Upon
				motion of

				  Cowan, Sr</name>,

				  Strong</name> was granted six weeks indulgence, and upon motion of 
				<name key="pn0001091" reg="Martin (first name unknown; possibly Eugene Stuart or George Saunders Martin)" type="person">Mr Martin</name>,

				  Cowan</name> was granted the same privilege.

				  Buchanan</name> then moved that he be granted a copy of

				  Gaston's</name> speech, together with one of

			 <p>Regular duties being next in order the following query was debated
				by the first and second classes, Viz "Should 
				<name key="name0001166" reg="US Congress" type="organization" rend="no">Congress</name>
				pass an 
			 	<name key="name0000524" reg="International Copyright Law" type="publication" rend="no">international copyright law</name>?"—the first class
				having the affirmative. Decided in favor of the 2<hi rend="sup">nd</hi> class.
				The query for the next night's discussion reads as follows,—"Is a
				Republican form of Government more stable than a Limited
				Monarchy?"—to be debated by the third and fourth classes, the former
				having the affirmative;
