										<p>That they are of opinion the dignity of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name> requires that the study of the Greek
											language be again introduced, and that no Student, except such as are
											hereafter mentioned, be admitted to the Honors of the Institution, without a
											competent knowledge of the Greek language; and recommend to the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board</name> the Ordinances marked A &amp; B
											accompanying this report.</p>

											<head type="original">A</head>
											<head type="original">An Ordinance to amend an ordinance entitled "an Ordinance
												establishing a plan of Education in the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name>" passed at the meeting of
												the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board</name> in June 1801.</head>
											<p>Be it ordained, That hereafter no Student, except such as are hereafter
												excepted, shall be admitted to the Honors of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name> without possessing a competent
												knowledge of the Greek Language; and that the Students in regular standing
												in the Freshman and Sophomore classes, during the Freshman &amp;
												Sophomore years, study 30 Dialogues of <name key="pn0001050" reg="Lucian" type="person">Lucian</name>, four books of <name key="pn0001831" reg="Xenophon" type="person">Xenophon's</name> Cyropedia, and four books of <name key="pn0000772" reg="Homer" type="person">Homer's</name> Iliad; and that they be not admitted to
												regular standing in the Junior Class, until they have passed an approved
												examination on the same.</p>
											<p>Be it further ordained, That the present Sophomore Class in the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of                                                   North Carolina" type="organization">University</name> be required to study the Gospel of S<hi rend="sup">t</hi> John in Greek, and pass an approved examination on the
												same, before they be admitted to regular standing in the Junior Class.</p>
											<p>Be it further ordained, That the present Freshman Class in the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of                                                   North Carolina" type="organization">University</name> be required to study the Gospels of S<hi rend="sup">t</hi> John and S<hi rend="sup">t</hi> Luke in Greek during the Freshman and Sophomore years,
												and that they pass an approved examination on the same, before they be
												admitted to regular standing in the Junior Class.</p>
											<p>Be it further ordained, That the present Junior &amp; Senior Classes be
												required to pass an approved examination on the French or Greek language
												before they be admitted to the Honors of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North                                                   Carolina" type="organization">University</name>.</p>
											<p>And be it further ordained, That nothing herein contained shall be
												considered or construed as forbidding the admission into any of the said
												Classes of a Student otherwise qualified and desirous of entering the same;
												on account of his deficiency in a competent knowledge of the Greek language;
												it being at all times understood, that Students<pb id="unc02-08-p03" n="58"/>admitted under this disqualification will not be considered as
												Candidates for the Honors of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North                                                   Carolina" type="organization">University</name>.</p>
											<p>Be it ordained, That all Ordinances which come within the purview and
												meaning of this Ordinance be and the same hereby declared to be repealed and
												made void.</p>

											<head type="original">B</head>
											<head type="original">An Ordinance to amend an Ordinance entitled "an Ordinance
												directing the plan of education in the Preparatory School," passed
												in June 1801.</head>
											<p>Be it ordained, That the Students in the Preparatory School be taught the
												rules of Prosody and the application of those rules as soon as they commence
												the Study of <name key="pn0000014" reg="Aesop" type="person" rend="yes">Asops'</name> Fables.</p>
											<p>Be it further ordained, That the Students in the Preparatory School, as
												soon as they commence the Study of Selectæ e Profanis, or <name key="pn0001270" reg="Nepos, Cornelius" type="person" rend="yes">Cornelius Nepos,</name> shall begin the study of the Greek
												Grammar; and that the Gospels of S<hi rend="sup">t</hi> John &amp; S<hi rend="sup">t</hi> Luke in Greek be taught in the Preparatory School; and
												that no Student from the Preparatory School nor elsewhere shall be admitted
												to a regular standing in the Freshman Class on the Establishment, until he
												has passed an approved examination on the same, and also on the Bucolics and
												the four first Eneids of <name key="pn0001711" reg="Virgil" type="person">Virgil</name>, which are hereby ordained to be taught in the
												Preparatory School.</p>

				<p>Resolved, That the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board</name> do concur with the foregoing Report, and that the
					Ordinances marked A &amp; B accompanying it, and as above written, be and the same are
					hereby adopted.</p>
				<p><name key="pn0000276" reg="Cameron, Duncan" type="person">M<hi rend="sup">r</hi> Cameron</name> introduced the following Ordinance which was passed, viz.<q>

									<p>Be it ordained, That it shall be the duty of the Professor of Languages to
										collect the tuition money from the Students on the establishment, and that he
										pay twelve dollars fifty cents out of each twenty dollars received from every
										Student, to the Treasurer semiannually; and that he be entitled to a commission
										of 2 per Centum on all money so paid to the Treasurer; and that the seven
										dollars fifty cents so retained by the said Professor, and the said commission,
										together with the fixed salary heretofore allowed him, be in full compensation
										for his yearly services.</p>
									<p>And be it further ordained, That no Student shall after the expiration of the
										present Session, be permitted to enter into any class on the establishment,
										until he shall have paid the requisite Tuition money and room rent to the
										Professor of Languages, and obtained a Certificate from him to that effect.</p>

				<p>Resolved, that <name key="pn0000574" reg="Gaston, William Joseph" type="person">M<hi rend="sup">r</hi> Gaston</name> and <name key="pn0003167" reg="Osborn, John C." type="person">M<hi rend="sup">r</hi> J. C. Osborn</name> be a Committee to prepare a form of a Diploma to
					be granted to Graduates in this Institution, and that they report the same to the next
					annual meeting of the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board</name>.</p>

				<p><name key="pn0003005" reg="Alves, Walter" type="person">M<hi rend="sup">r</hi> Alves</name> from the <name key="name0003012" reg="Building Committee, Board of                         Trustees" type="organization">Committee</name> appointed to examine into the state of the
					Buildings &amp;c. presented the following report, viz.<q>

									<head type="original">The <name key="name0003012" reg="Building Committee, Board of                                             Trustees" type="organization">Committee</name> appointed to examine into the present
										state of the Buildings &amp;c.</head>
									<opener>
										<salute>Report,</salute>
									</opener>
									<p>That it is essential in their opinion, to the preservation of the Buildings,
										that the following repairs be done without delay, viz.</p>
									<list>
										<head>Upon the College—</head>
										<item>The roof to be repaired and made water tight, and then well painted.</item>
										<item>Four strong outside doors to be made, and put up with proper locks or
											fastenings.</item>
										<item>All the broken Window sashes to be repaired and glased.</item>
										<item>Three good strong ladders to be procured and put up.</item>
									</list>
									<list>
										<head>Upon the Steward's House &amp; Lot—</head>
										<item>The front Sill to be renewed at the door, or if necessary, the whole
											length of the House.</item>
										<item>A Strong Outside Door to be made for the dining room, with a good lock.</item>
										<item>The passage to the Back House to be shingled &amp; guttered and new
											steps made to it.</item>
										<item>The Roof of the House to be well painted.</item>
										<item>And they recommend, that instead of new plastering the smaller rooms next
											the dining room, that they be cieled with plank, completely seasoned, and that
											three locks be procured for the inside doors.</item>
										<item>Two of the Chimnies belonging to the kitchen are in so tottering and
											dangerous a situation, that your <name key="name0003012" reg="Building Committee, Board of                                                 Trustees" type="organization">Committee</name> are of opinion they should be pulled
											down and rebuilt in a substantial manner.</item>
										<item>The upper sashes of the Kitchen windows to be glazed.</item>
										<item>A set of good benches for the dining Hall appears to be much wanted; Your <name key="name0003012" reg="Building                                                 Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization">Committee</name> therefore recommend that they be
											procured.</item>
									</list>
									<p>The Steward having represented to your <name key="name0003012" reg="Building Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization">Committee</name> the disadvantages he labors under for
										want of pasture, they have thought it proper to recommend to the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board                                             of Trustees" type="organization">Board</name>, that the Steward be permitted to procure
										four thousand rails from the College lands, at a distance from the Buildings and
										ornamented grounds, at such place as the Treasurer shall point out to him, for
										the purpose of fencing a pasture — it being understood and agreed
										upon, that the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board</name> is to incur no other expense thereby than to
										pay the price of maulling the rails; the hauling and putting up the rails to be
										at his own expense.</p>
									<p>And they further recommend, that a yard in front of the Steward's house be
										enclosed with posts &amp; plank in a cheap but substantial manner, to extend
										as far as the line of the Garden fence and to be planted around with Lombardy
										Poplar Trees at regular distances; with substantial steps or a stile in front of
										the door.</p>
									<p>Your <name key="name0003012" reg="Building Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization">Committee</name> observe with regret, that the Walls of
										the Principal Building have so long remained uncovered, by which the tops of the<pb id="unc02-08-p05" n="60"/>Walls, if not already materially injured, are in danger of being so.
										To preserve them from the affects of the weather, and as the cheapest mode of
										doing so, your <name key="name0003012" reg="Building                                             Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization">Committee</name> recommend that the Walls be covered with
										rough plank, in the same manner as already begun.</p>
									<p>Your <name key="name0003012" reg="Building Committee, Board of                                             Trustees" type="organization">Committee</name> beg leave to suggest, as a means of
										preventing the abuse and unnecessary waste and destruction of the houses and the
										property of the Institution under the care of the Steward, that the Treasurer be
										directed to take from the Steward an Obligation in writing, binding him at the
										expiration of his Stewardship to deliver up to the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board</name> or their Agent, the Houses, Garden and other
										property put under his charge, with every appurtenance thereunto belonging in
										such a state of repair as he may receive them, or as they may be put into during
										the term of his Stewardship.</p>
									<p>The short space of time which your <name key="name0003012" reg="Building Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization">Committee</name> have to remain at this place render it
										impossible for them to contract for the necessary repairs. They therefore
										recommend the adoption of the following Resolution, viz.</p>
									<p>Resolved, That the Treasurer be requested and empowered to enter into contract
										with some proper person or persons without delay, for making the repairs
										mentioned in the foregoing report; and that he be empowered to pay for the same
										from the funds of the Institution".</p>

				<p>Resolved, That the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board</name> do concur with the foregoing Report, and that the
					Resolution therein contained by and the same hereby adopted.</p>
				<p>Resolved, That the Steward be empowered to employ, without delay, some proper person to
					make the necessary repairs to the Garden fence, and that the Treasurer pay the same as
					soon as the account of the expense thereof shall be presented to and allowed by him.</p>
				<p>Resolved, That the Secretary procure to be printed 400 copies of an Ordinance passed in
					December 1799, entitled "an Ordinance to supply the place of <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Trustees</name> who shall fail to discharge their duties as such for
					a certain time," and that he furnish each member of the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board</name>, immediately on the appointment of such member, with a
					Copy thereof.</p>
				<p>Resolved further, That the Treasurer pay the expense of printing the aforesaid copies.</p>
				<p>Adjourned sine die.</p>
