Specifications for the President's House, January 25, 1794
A House for the President of the University of North Carolina 30 feet long 36
feet wide, two Storeys high 11 feet between the floor and Ceiling, the upper
Story 9 feet between the floor and Ceiling, with a passage at one end 10 feet by
36. The Scantling and boards as follows, towit, Side Sills 10 by 12 Inches, and
Sills 10 by 15 Inches, Simmons and Girders of a proper size, Corner posts 10 by
15 Inches, principal posts 12 by 5 feet for lower Story posts and braces for
lower Story 7 by 5 Inches, posts and braces for upper Story 6 by 4 Inches,
Interstice 5 by 14 Inches, first set of Joyce 12 by 4 Inches, Second set of
ditto 9 by 4 Inches, Plates 12 by 4 Inches, Rafters 8 by 4 Inches at lower end
and 4 by 4 Inches at upper end Sleepers 10 by 3 Inches, and all other Scantling
in proportion. Plank for lower floor 1½ Inches at least quartern, for
upper floor 1 ¼ Inches of quartern, lower window frames 7 by 7 Inches
upper ditto 7 by 6 Inches. Sills for window frames 7 by 9 and 7.8 Inches. No
piece of Scantling to be splic'd. A Stair Case at one end of the passage with a
Closet; two rooms on the lower floor, one 19 by 16 feet the other 19 by 14 feet
with a closet at both sides of the Chimney with two doors to each Closet; the
rooms to be Ceiled with quartern plank of an equal width tongued and
groved, and joints broke Chair board high with wash boards and base and Surbase
to large room to have a plain Cornish round the room with Chimney pieces to each
fire place; The passage to be Ceiled in the same manner of the lower rooms five
feet high, the other part of the Ceiling of the rooms and passage to be
plaistered with good lime mortar, and painted the walls, with Common Coulours as
may be directed by the trustees and the Ceiling over head white washed; The
upper Story to be divided in two rooms over the two lower rooms of the same size
and one over the passage 10 by 12 feet the large rooms to have Closets in the
same manner of the lower rooms and directly over them, the upper rooms and
passage to have wash boards and base and Surbase, as the lower, and plaistered
and painted in same manner and white washed over head; two out doors to the
passage one at each end 6 pannels, 7 room doors 6 pannel 9 Closet doors 6
pannel, 10 windows to the lower Story 18 lights 12 by 10 Inches, and one in the
passage to the Closet 8 lights 12 by 10 Inches, 12 windows to the upper Story 15
lights 12 by 10 Inches, Venitian window Shutters to the lower Story, the out
door frames worked out of timber, the inside doors well Cased. The
house to be weather boarded with feather edge plank 9 Inches wide one fourth
thick after dressed on one edge ¼ Inch thick on the other edge, with a quarter
round worked thereon each board to Shew 6 Inches and no more, Shingles good
heart of pine 18 Inches long to shew 5 Inches; a Cellaw under the large room 2
½ feet in the Ground to be walled with Stone to the Surface of the earth with
brick above 4 feet the other part to be underpinned with Stone to the Surface of
the ground and the other four feet with brick, the whole to be laid with good
lime mortor at least 4 bushels to every 1000 bricks, a Stack of Chimneys with a
fire place to each of the 4 large rooms, to be well laid in good lime Mortar
with Chimney pieces the plasitering to be with good lime and Mortar; the
Ceiling, doors windows, Washboards base and Surbase, plaistering Cornish Stair
Case outside of the walls and roof to be painted with Common Coulours, as may be
directed by the Trustees,
The whole to be finished and Compleated in a workman
like manner including anything that is omitted in this memorandum for the
Completion Bond on or before the first day of January next; The whole to be
Compleated for the sum of eight hundred pounds, in the following manner viz One
third when the house is begun, ⅓ when the house is raised and Covered, and 1/3
when the house is Compleated. The undertaker to find all the materials for this
house including Imported articles, that is Locks hinges, Nails Paint etc. the
locks to be good and suitable for such a building—also to make Steps to the
doors of said house, and including as aforesaid every thing necessary to
Compleat said house and Cellar.
