                <p>The Governor laid before the committee letters from <name key="pn0001194" reg="Mitchell, Elisha" type="person" rend="yes">Professor Mitchell</name> &amp;
                        <name key="pn0000119" reg="Battle, William H." type="person" rend="yes">Judge
                    Battle</name> on sundry subjects relating to the property &amp; affairs of
                    the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name>, when the committee after due consideration adopted the
                    following resolutions.</p>
                <p>1<hi rend="sup">st</hi> Resolved that the sum of Five Hundred dollars be and the
                    same is hereby appropriated for the improvement of the grounds around the
                    college buildings to be drawn from the Treasurer and expendid under the order
                    and direction of the committee hereafter appointed</p>
                <p>2<hi rend="sup">nd</hi> Resolved that the said committee be authorised and
                    directed to have the covering of the <name key="name0001062" reg="South Building" type="place">South Building</name> repaired</p>
                <p>3<hi rend="sup">rd</hi> Resolved that the <name key="name0003030" reg="Joseph Caldwell's residence, lot 19, Franklin Street, Chapel Hill" type="place" rend="yes">Caldwell House</name>, heretofore purchased by the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Trustees</name>
                    for the Presidents residence ought to<pb id="unc03-02-p02" n="153"/>occupied by
                    the President of the College for the time being; and that <name key="pn0001638" reg="Swain, David Lowry" type="person" rend="yes">Gov Swain</name> be authorised
                    &amp; requested to take possession of the same.</p>
                <p>4<hi rend="sup">th</hi> Resolved that the House and appurtenances now in the
                    occupancy of <name key="pn0001638" reg="Swain, David Lowry" type="person">Gov
                    Swain</name> be appropriated to the use and occupation of the Professor of
                    Rhetoric &amp; Logic</p>
                <p>5<hi rend="sup">th</hi> That the said <name key="name0000352" reg="Executive                         Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization" rend="yes">committee</name> be and
                    they are hereby authorised &amp; directed to cause both of these places, the
                    dwelling outhouses, &amp; fences to be properly repaired; that they make
                    sale on the best terms they can, of such superfluous or unnecessary Out-Houses
                    as can be spared from either of these places; &amp; that the requisite
                    repairs of inclosures &amp; fences be made of stone.</p>
                <p>6<hi rend="sup">th</hi> That said <name key="name0000352" reg="Executive Committee,                         Board of Trustees" type="organization">committee</name> be directed to cause
                    the old society Halls in the <name key="name0001062" reg="South Building" type="place">South Building</name> to be fitted up for Dormitories or such
                    other uses as the Institution may require.</p>
                <p>7<hi rend="sup">th</hi> Resolved that <name key="pn0001638" reg="Swain, David Lowry" type="person">Gov Swain</name>
                    <name key="pn0000119" reg="Battle, William H." type="person">Judge Battle</name>
                    &amp; <name key="pn0001194" reg="Mitchell, Elisha" type="person">Professor
                        Mitchell</name> be and they, or a majority of them, are hereby appointed a
                    committee to carry out the foregoing resolutions, to cause<pb id="unc03-02-p03" n="154"/>all repairs &amp; work therein contemplated to be done in the
                    most faithfull and workmanlike manner and that they draw on the Treasurer from
                    time to time for such sums of money as may be necessary.</p>
                <p>Resolved, that <name key="pn0003166" reg="Norwood, John Wall" type="person">John W Norwood
                        Esqr</name> the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name> atto. for the <name key="name0000484" reg="Hillsborough, NC" type="place" rend="yes">Hillsboro district</name> be requested
                    to make inquiry into certain alleged trespasses on the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name>
                    lands near <name key="name0000165" reg="Chapel Hill, NC" type="place" rend="yes">Chapel
                    Hill</name> &amp; to take such steps as may be necessary to dispossess
                    &amp; punish intruders.</p>
                <p><name key="name0000352" reg="Executive Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization">Committee</name> adjourned</p>
