                <p> A Resolution of the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board of Trustees</name> providing for instruction in
                    Civil Engineering &amp; Agricultural Chemistry adopted on the 15 ins<hi rend="sup">t</hi>. was submitted to the Committee &amp; thereupon the
                    following resolution was adopted unanimously. </p>
                <p>Resolved</p>
                <p>That a School for the application of Science to the arts shall be established at
                    the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization" rend="yes">University</name>. That <name key="pn0001357" reg="Phillips, Charles" type="person">Charles Phillips</name> be appointed
                    Professor of Civil Engineering &amp; <name key="pn0000708" reg="Hedrick, Benjamin Sherwood" type="person" rend="yes">Benjamin S.
                        Hedrick</name> Professor of Agricultural Chemistry with salaries of
                    $1200 each from the time they enter upon the discharge of their duties. </p>
                <p> That Prof<hi rend="sup">r</hi>. <name key="pn0001357" reg="Phillips, Charles" type="person" rend="yes">Phillips</name> be allowed to go abroad for the
                    purpose of preparing himself for the proper discharge of his duties <pb id="unc04-12-p02" n="169"/> and that during the period of his absence he be
                    allowed to procure a proper person to discharge his duties or Tutor; and that he
                    be permitted to receive his salary as Professor. </p>
                <p> That the <name key="pn0001638" reg="Swain, David Lowry" type="person" rend="yes">President</name> of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name> be
                    directed to submit as early as practicable a plan in detail for the organization
                    of this school &amp; that the same shall be put in operation in January
                    1854. </p>
                <p> The following Regulation was adopted. </p>
                <p> Ordered that Tutor <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Richard Henry</name> be
                    required to occupy a room on the second or third passage of the <name key="name0001062" reg="South Building" type="place">South Building</name>,
                    &amp; that if a vacant one cannot be obtained that the <name key="name0000869" reg="Philanthropic Society" type="organization">Philanthropic Society</name> be requested to designate a room by lot or
                    otherwise. </p>
                <p>In case an occupant is deprived of his room, by this arrangement the Bursar is
                    authorized to pay the rent of a room for him in the <name key="name0000165" reg="Chapel Hill, NC" type="place" rend="yes">village</name> during the
                    first Session but no longer. </p>
                <p rend="right"> Committee Adjourned. </p>
