                <head>Resolution on the Death of Dr. <name key="pn0000268" reg="Caldwell, Joseph" type="person" rend="yes">Caldwell</name>, January 31, 1835</head>
                <p>A meeting of the citizens of <name key="name0000484" reg="Hillsborough, NC" type="place" rend="yes">Hillsborough</name> was held on Friday the 30th instant, to adopt resolutions expressive of their feelings on occasion of the death of the late Rev. Dr. <name key="pn0000268" reg="Caldwell, Joseph" type="person">Caldwell</name>, President of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name>. The Hon. <name key="pn0001260" reg="Nash, Frederick" type="person" rend="yes">Frederick Nash</name> was called to the chair. The object of the meeting being briefly explained by the Chairman, the following resolutions were offered by the Rev. <name key="pn0000622" reg="Green, William Mercer" type="person" rend="yes">William M. Green</name>, prefaced by a very feeling and appropriate address, who was followed by <name key="pn000" reg="Waddell, Hugh" type="person" rend="yes">Hugh Waddell</name>, esq. in terms no less suited to the occasion.</p>
                <p><hi rend="italics">Resolved</hi>, That this meeting has heard with unfeigned sorrow of the death of the Rev. <name key="pn0000268" reg="Caldwell, Joseph" type="person">JOSEPH CALDWELL</name>, D. D., the late venerable and much-loved President of our <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name>.</p>
                <p><hi rend="italics">Resolved</hi>, That in his death we deplore the loss of the Christian, the Philanthropist, the Scholar, and the Public Benefactor.</p>
                <p><hi rend="italics">Resolved</hi>, That, as a tribute of respect to the memory of the deceased, the members of this meeting do wear crape on their left arms for thirty days; and that the same be recommended to the alumni of our <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name> generally.</p>
                <p><hi rend="italics">Resolved</hi>. That the "<name key="name0000352" reg="Executive Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization" rend="yes">Executive Committee</name>" of our <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name> be, and they hereby are requested, if consistent with their views of propriety, to appoint one of the alumni of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name> to deliver a eulogy on the character of the deceased. at <name key="name0000165" reg="Chapel Hill, NC" type="place" rend="yes">Chapel Hill</name>, on the afternoon of the day preceding the next Commencement.</p>
                <p><hi rend="italics">Resolved</hi>, That a copy of these resolutions be sent to the afflicted <name key="pn0000265" reg="Caldwell, Helen Hooper (née Hogg)" type="person" rend="yes">widow</name> of the deceased, to the officers of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name>, to the Governor of the State as ex officio President of <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board of Trustees</name>, and to the Hon. <name key="pn0000276" reg="Cameron, Duncan" type="person" rend="yes">Duncan Cameron</name>, President of the <name key="name0000352" reg="Executive Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization">Executive Committee</name>.</p>
                <p><hi rend="italics">Resolved</hi>, That the Editors of the Hillsborough Recorder, Raleigh Register, Star, and Standard, be respectfully requested to publish the foregoing resolutions.</p>
                <p>The above resolutions were unanimously adopted.</p>
