                <p>The following announcement was made by the secretary &amp; the following
                    Resolutions adopted on the motion of Co<hi rend="sup">l</hi>. <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Barringer</name>. </p>
                <p>The Rev<hi rend="sup">d</hi>. <name key="pn0001360" reg="Phillips, James" type="person">James Phillips</name> D.D. the senior Professor in this <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization" rend="yes">Institution</name> departed this life in the 75<hi rend="sup">th</hi> year of his age on the morning of the 14<hi rend="sup">th</hi> ult<hi rend="sup">o</hi>. He was the first to enter the <name key="x" reg="x" type="place" rend="">Chapel</name> &amp; take his accustomed seat with
                    his recitation room key &amp; text book for morning recitation in his hand.
                    He died almost instantly <pb id="unc05-30-p02" n="275"/>without a struggle or a
                    groan in the very spot where at stated intervals during more than thirty years
                    he had risen to lead in the religious services of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">Institution</name>.
                    The last sounds in his ear were the familiar tones of the College Bell, the last
                    object of sight the students assembling for prayers. </p>
                <p>D<hi rend="sup">r</hi>. <name key="pn0001360" reg="Phillips, James" type="person">Phillips</name> was born in <name key="name0000336" reg="England" type="place">England</name> 22<hi rend="sup">nd</hi> April 1792, came to
                    this Country 1815, was appointed Professor of Mathematics and Natural
                    Philosophy, over eminent competitors in May &amp; entered upon the
                    performance of his duties in July 1826. </p>
                <p>He never failed to meet his class, at the appointed hour from any cause during
                    the first ten years, was rarely absent during the remaining thirty one <pb id="unc05-30-p03" n="276"/>of his service, &amp; never except from
                    unavoidable cause, or while with the concurrence of the authorities of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization" rend="yes">University</name>, engaged in the performance of higher duties He
                    filled his professorship during a longer period than any of his predecessors
                    with learning, fidelity &amp; ability rarely equaled &amp; never
                    surpassed in the department of service to which his life was devoted. </p>
                <p>In the opinion of the <name key="name0000352" reg="Executive Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization" rend="yes">Committee</name>, the authorities of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name>
                    &amp; the people of <name key="name0000745" reg="North Carolina" type="place">North Carolina</name> are deeply indebted for the long
                    continued &amp; eminent services of the deceased professor, &amp; as
                    offering grateful evidence of their appreciation of his worth: </p>
                <p>Resolved that the Rev<hi rend="sup">d</hi>. Professor <name key="pn0000726" reg="Hepburn, Andrew Dousa" type="person" rend="yes">Hepburn</name> be
                    requested <pb id="unc05-30-p04" n="277"/>to deliver a funeral oration before the
                        <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Trustees</name>, Faculty &amp; students of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name> in
                        <name key="name0000418" reg="Gerrard Hall" type="place" rend="yes">Gerard
                        Hall</name> on the day immediately preceding the performance of the
                    Commencement exercises in June next &amp; that the public be respectfully
                    requested to unite with them in the bestowment of appropriate funeral honors. </p>
                <p>Resolved that the salary be continued &amp; paid to the legal
                    representatives of the deceased until the close of the present session;
                    &amp; that his Family be respectfully &amp; affectionately invited to
                    remain in the possession of the premises so long occupied by him until the close
                    of the year.</p>
                <p><name key="org0000352" reg="Executive Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization">Committee</name> adjourned.</p>
