                    <p>Know all men by these presents, that we <name key="pn0001656" reg="Taylor, John                             &quot;Buck&quot;" type="person">John Taylor</name>, at present
                        of the city of <name key="name0000934" reg="Raleigh, NC" rend="yes" type="place">Raleigh</name>, <name key="pn000" reg="Hunt, John" type="person" rend="yes">John Hunt</name> of the county of <name key="name0000394" reg="Franklin County, NC" rend="yes" type="place">Franklin</name>, <name key="pn000" reg="Mebane, John" type="person" rend="yes">John Mebane</name> of the county of <name key="name0000178" reg="Chatham County, NC" rend="yes" type="place">Chatham</name>, <name key="pn000" reg="Lytle, William" type="person" rend="yes">William
                        Lytle</name> of the county of <name key="name0000804" reg="Orange County, NC" rend="yes" type="place">Orange</name>, and <name key="pn0001863" reg="Patterson, James" type="person" rend="yes">James Patterson</name>
                        also of the county of <name key="name0000178" reg="Chatham County, NC" type="place">Chatham</name>, are held and firmly bound to the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">trustees</name> of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North                             Carolina" type="organization">university of North Carolina</name> in the
                        sum of two thousand pounds current money of the said state; to which payment
                        well and truly to be made we bind ourselves, and each of us, our heirs,
                        executors, &amp; administrators, jointly &amp; severally firmly by
                        these presents, signed with our hands, sealed with our seals, and dated this
                        sixteenth day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred
                        and ninety four [five].</p>
                    <p>The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above bounden
                            <name key="pn0001656" reg="Taylor, John &quot;Buck&quot;" type="person">John Taylor</name> was by vote of the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">trustees</name> of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">university of North Carolina</name> on the twelfth day of the present
                        month appointed steward of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North                             Carolina" type="organization">university</name> for the term of five
                        years commencing<pb id="unc06-08-p02" n="168"/>on the fifteenth day of
                        January which shall happen in the year 1796, and as such did stipulate and
                        agree and is bound to furnish each student and other person living at
                        commons at the said <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">university</name> for breakfast on each and every
                        day a sufficient quantity of good milk, or good coffee and tea or chocolate
                        and tea, together with a warm roll or loaf of wheat or corn flour at the
                        option of each student, and a sufficient quantity of butter; for dinner a
                        dish or cover of bacon and greens, or beef and turnips, together with a
                        sufficient quantity of fresh meats or fowls, or puddings and tarts with a
                        sufficiency of wheat or corn bread. And for supper a sufficiency of coffee,
                        tea or milk at his option, together with the necessary quantity of bread or
                        biscuit, and to furnish also potatoes &amp; all other kinds of vegetable
                        food usually served up in <name key="name0000745" reg="North Carolina" type="place">Carolina</name> in sufficient quantities, and to cause that
                        the tables be covered every other day with clean cloths, to bring or cause
                        to be brought from the spring such quantity of water as shall be necessary
                        for the students<pb id="unc06-08-p03" n="169"/>in the opinion of the faculty
                        and to place the same at or in the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of                             North Carolina" type="organization">university</name> as he may be
                        directed, to cause that the rooms in the <name key="name0001146" reg="University                             of North Carolina" type="organization">university</name> be swept and
                        the beds be made daily; and to cause also that the whole of the floors be
                        washed clean at least once every fortnight together with the passages,
                        staircases, steps &amp;c. and particularly to cause that breakfast,
                        dinner, and supper be regularly served up on each day and on such stated
                        hours as have been heretofore pointed out to him and fixed on, that is to
                        say breakfast shall be on the table at eight O'clock in the morning, dinner
                        at one O'clock in the afternoon, and supper before or after candle light as
                        the faculty shall direct; now if in all these matters and things the said
                            <name key="pn0001656" reg="Taylor, John &quot;Buck&quot;" type="person">John Taylor</name> shall faithfully and truly acquit
                        himself and in good faith execute and perform them agreeably to the nature
                        and meaning of his contract and to the trust reposed in him then this
                        obligation shall be void, otherwise it shall be in force.</p>

                    <p>It is to be remembered; that at those meals whether breakfast or supper, at
                        which a sufficient quantity of milk shall be furnished, neither coffee, tea,
                        nor chocolate shall be required, unless by boys who eat no milk, the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">trustees</name> have agreed that milk may be dispensed with until the first
                        day of May in the year 1796, and wheat bread and biscuit until the first day
                        of August in the said year.</p>
