                <head>Laws and Regulations of the <name key="name0000284" reg="Dialectic Society" type="organization" rend="yes">Debating Society</name>, 1795-1798</head>
                <head type="original" rend="center">Laws and Regulations </head>
                <p> The Officers of the <name key="name0000284" reg="Dialectic Society" type="organization">Debating Society</name> shall be a President, Censor
                    Morum, two Correctors, a Clerk, and Treasurer. The Time and Manner of electing
                    these and their Duties shall be as follows. </p>
                <list>
                    <item> 1<hi rend="sup">st</hi>. The President, shall be chosen by Ballot once in
                        three Weeks, and shall be appointed one Week before he takes the Chair.</item>
                    <item> 2<hi rend="sup">nd</hi>. On Taking the Chair, he shall deliver an Address
                        to the Members on the Necessity of Order, or any Subject he may think
                        proper.</item>
                    <item> 3<hi rend="sup">rd</hi>. It shall be his duty to call any of the Members
                        to Order, impose fines, and admonish any Member when it shall be necessary.</item>
                    <item> 4<hi rend="sup">th</hi>. During the Continuance of his Office, he shall
                        be excused from the regular Exercises of the <name key="name0000284" reg="Dialectic Society" type="organization" rend="yes">Society</name>,
                        unless he chuses to perform Them.</item>
                </list>
                <list>
                    <item> 1<hi rend="sup">st</hi>. The Censor Morum shall be chosen by Ballot every
                        six Weeks, and one Week before he enters upon his duty.</item>

                    <item>2<hi rend="sup">nd</hi>. It shall be his duty to inspect the Conduct and
                        Morals of the Members; and report to the <name key="name0000284" reg="Dialectic Society" type="organization">Society</name> those who
                        persevere by Inattention to the Studies of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization" rend="yes">University</name>, by Neglect of his duties as a Member or by acting in
                        such a manner, as to reflect disgrace on his fellow Members.</item>
                    <item> 3<hi rend="sup">rd</hi>. In the Absence of the President he shall take
                        the Chair and execute the Duties of the place.</item>
                </list>

                    <item> 1<hi rend="sup">st</hi>. The Correctors shall be chosen by Ballot every
                        six Weeks.</item>
                    <item> 2<hi rend="sup">nd</hi>. They shall inspect the Compositions of the
                        Members in the Course of each Week and report their Corrections or remarks
                        at the ensuing <name key="name0000284" reg="Dialectic Society" type="organization">Society</name>.</item>
                    <item> 3<hi rend="sup">rd</hi>. They shall inspect the Clerks Books and see that
                        he records the Transactions in neat and correct Writing.</item>
                </list>

                    <item> 1<hi rend="sup">st</hi>. The Clerk shall be chosen by Ballot every six
                        Weeks;</item>
                    <item> 2<hi rend="sup">nd</hi>. It shall be his duty carefully to note down the
                        Transactions of the <name key="name0000284" reg="Dialectic Society" type="organization">Society</name> in neat and correct Writing; he shall
                        mark down those who have been fined by the President; he shall call over the
                        Names at each Meeting, note down the Absentees, and shall read over the
                        Minutes of the last Meeting</item>

                    <item>at the beginning of the next; &amp; shall take care of the papers
                        belonging to the <name key="name0000284" reg="Dialectic Society" type="organization">Society</name>.</item>
                </list>
                <list>
                    <item> 1<hi rend="sup">st</hi>. The Treasurer shall be chosen by ballot every
                        three Weeks.</item>
                    <item> 2<hi rend="sup">nd</hi>. He shall collect all fines imposed by the
                        President, receive Entrance Money &amp;<hi rend="sup">c</hi>
                            &amp;<hi rend="sup">c</hi> and shall give a fair Statement of his
                        Account before he leaves his Office.</item>
                </list>
                <list>
                    <item> 1<hi rend="sup">st</hi>. The <name key="name0000284" reg="Dialectic Society" type="organization">Society</name> shall meet on
                        Thursday Evening in each Week, and on Meeting, the Clerk shall read over the
                        proceedings of the preceding Session; and the Names of those fined be called
                        to see if each has paid.</item>
                    <item> 2<hi rend="sup">nd</hi>. That if any Member has any Motion or proposal to
                        make, it shall be made before the regular Exercises come on.</item>
                    <item> 3<hi rend="sup">rd</hi>. The Members being divided into three Classes,
                        shall read, speak and compose alternately.</item>
                    <item> 4<hi rend="sup">th</hi>. Debating on a Question shall be regularly
                        performed at each Meeting; the debate shall be opened by two persons
                        appointed for that purpose, under the penalty of a Fine; and after they have
                        done, all the Members have a right to join in the Debate. </item>

                    <item>5<hi rend="sup">th</hi>. That the Subjects of Debate be not wanting, it is
                        enjoined that every person, in the reading Class, shall give in a Question
                        to the Clerk, on the night on which he reads with his Name undersigned.</item>
                    <item>6<hi rend="sup">th</hi>. No person shall be admited as a Member of this
                            <name key="name0000284" reg="Dialectic Society" type="organization">Society</name> without having been regularly proposed; and if two
                        Members be opposed to his Admittance, He shall not be admited.</item>
                    <item>7<hi rend="sup">th</hi>. When any Member is admited, he shall stand up
                        until the Clerk reads the Constitution of the <name key="name0000284" reg="Dialectic Society" type="organization">Society</name>; the
                        President shall then address him on the Design and Utility of the
                        Constitution, &amp; require his promise not to divulge any of the
                        Secrets of the <name key="name0000284" reg="Dialectic Society" type="organization">Society</name>; after which he shall be conducted to
                        a Seat.</item>
                    <item>8<hi rend="sup">th</hi>. No person shall wear his Hat in the <name key="name0000284" reg="Dialectic Society" type="organization">Society</name>.</item>
                    <item>9<hi rend="sup">th</hi>. Any person who takes Umbrage at being fined
                        legally, shall be fined one Quarter of a Dollar, if he denotes it by Word,
                        or by Action.</item>
                    <item>10<hi rend="sup">th</hi>. No person when speaking shall be enterrupted by
                        the Laughing or Talking of Another.</item>
                    <item>11<hi rend="sup">th</hi>. The price of Entrance shall be one Quarter of a
                        Dollar</item>

                <p> himself for three Months without a Diploma, <gap reason="[unrecovered]"/> be
                    readmited without a new Balloting; But if <gap reason="[unrecovered]"/> said
                    Member shall find it inconvenient to return within said time, he may, if he
                    think proper, apply to the <name key="name0000284" reg="Dialectic Society" type="organization">Society</name> for a Diploma; which Diploma, if obtained
                    within three Months, shall ever after be deemed valid for his Admittance: And
                    the said Diploma shall be deposited in the hands of the Clerk, who shall be
                    accountable for the same to the <name key="name0000284" reg="Dialectic Society" type="organization">Society</name>. </p>
